Why Might a Child Need a Tooth Extraction?
There are many reasons why children need extractions.
- Trauma or injury. Your child’s dentist may recommend a tooth extraction if the tooth becomes irreparably damaged.
- Tooth decay. Severe tooth decay can weaken the tooth, requiring tooth extraction.
- Impacted wisdom teeth. An impacted wisdom tooth can cause pain and damage to the other teeth. Often, impacted wisdom teeth need to be removed.
- Need for orthodontic treatment. Extractions make room inside the mouth when crowding causes teeth to become crooked. Once the tooth is extracted, the orthodontist may use braces or aligners to straighten the teeth.
What to Expect During a Pediatric Tooth Extraction
Before the procedure begins, the dentist uses X-rays to create a plan and anticipate any complications that could arise. During the procedure itself, the pediatric dentist uses local anesthesia to numb the area so the patient can’t feel what’s happening inside the mouth. Children may also be given nitrous oxide or another type of medication to help calm them if they’re feeling very anxious.
Once the child is numb and calm, the dentist uses a special tool to remove the tooth or teeth. Finally, sterile gauze is used to cover the socket where the tooth used to be. The gauze can help control and then stop the bleeding. Some patients also need stitches.
Aftercare Following a Tooth Extraction
After a tooth extraction, it’s important to follow your pediatric dentist’s instructions to encourage proper healing. Most children recover quickly by resting, eating soft foods, avoiding straws for the recommended period, and maintaining gentle oral hygiene around the treatment area.
Will My Child Need a Space Maintainer?
If a baby tooth is removed before the permanent tooth is ready to erupt, a space maintainer may be recommended to prevent neighboring teeth from shifting into the empty space. Our pediatric dentists will determine whether this additional treatment is appropriate during your child’s visit.
